PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick Dec 08/17, Down 44%) They are patent trolls. They have lumpy earnings quarter to quarter. Recently they have been losing money. They moved partly to the Internet-Of-Things. They won a big suit against AAPL-Q but they are appealing it. Legislation has made it hard for a company to be a patent troll now.
TOP PICK
They have been getting so many licenses that it should help with revenues going forward. It pays a dividend that is pretty good at this level. They will be looking to do some takeovers that are accretive. It could quadruple, depending on the law suits they are dealing with, especially AAPL-Q. (Analysts’ price target is $2.08)
WAIT
A name he wants to like but their results are so volatile that are very difficult to gauge. They just won a decision against Apple so probably will have some cash going their way. He prefers to wait until they show some consistent cash-flows. (Analysts’ price target is $2.08)
HOLD

Hasn't looked at this closely. They were planning to make some acqusitions and be more of a holding company, then they had a bump when they reached some settlements with Apple, which is contesting those settlements. The stock looks cheap, but he's not big on holding companies. Don't sell now; it's too cheap and holding on better than most stocks in the current downturn. It's a defensive position. If they get the money from Apple, it should move up nicely. He doesn't own this stock, because it's too small.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Nov. 3/17, Down 35%) He likes management and had a long chat with them recently. They are cautious in terms of who they are going to take over. They have cash in the bank. They recently won a lawsuit with APPL-Q, who are going to appeal. They have other lawsuits going on at present and they could win a number of them. They have lumpy revenue. He has it on the buy list and is quite comfortable with it. They have no debt.

WATCH

They still generate a lot of cash flow from their patents. New management has a new strategy. They made acquisitions last year to diversify. They seem to be implementing a software roll up strategy. Hang on if you own it, otherwise wait a few quarters to see exactly what the strategy will be.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Sep 26/17, Up 10%) They just won a huge law suit against AAPL-Q and the stock is up a lot today. He would not count it as money in the bank as AAPL-Q is going to appeal. This company may also win other suits in progress. They have lots of money in the bank and no debt.

TOP PICK

$4.84 is his sell target. The volume has skyrocketed. It could become a momentum play and a growth play as well as what they are doing with the patents.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick Aug. 14/17, Down 6%) They have done three takeovers of some size over the last year. Last quarter they lost about 12 million. He suspects there will be better news going forward. In the States, legislation is against them now. You have to be ready for quite a roller coaster ride.

DON'T BUY

Take the money and run. They will lose 12 cents in 2018, and lose 5 cents in 2019. There are better opportunities.

HOLD

Was previously Wi-Lan. The balance sheet, revenues and margins are all pretty good, but it seems to still be a show-me stock. They have had screw ups over the past 10 years, but they seem to be getting on track. He thinks they need to see an acquisition to get things going.

PAST TOP PICK

(A Top Pick April 3/17 Down 21%) This was previously Wi-Lan. It lost $12 million last quarter, but with $49 million in cash flow. They have done three material takeovers on the last year. This company will be in expansion mode and he continues to like it as a turnaround candidate.

BUY ON WEAKNESS

They are trying to re-make their brand. It looks cheap and the balance sheet looks pristine. There is not much downside, but he continues to sit on the sidelines as it is still a bit expensive.

BUY

(A Top Pick April 3, 2017. Down 14.04%). This is one of his top picks again today. The company has morphed. It has gone into the internet of things, has made acquisitions (available cash has gone down from 100 million to 35-40 million). They have a new CEO who was very successful at Open Text. Their earnings will probably be less lumpy. Last quarter, their revenues were 85 million, compared to 90 million for last year. The improvement is huge. The stock went up to some degree but came back.

TOP PICK

This is a former patent troll. The company has morphed. It has gone into the internet of things, has made acquisitions (available cash has gone down from 100 million to 35-40 million). He is concerned that they might blow their cash on new takeovers and concerned about the risk of heavy writedowns if they do too many takeovers. They have a new CEO who was very successful at Open Text. Their earnings will probably be less lumpy. Last quarter, their revenues were 85 million, compared to 90 million for last year. The improvement is huge. They pay a small dividend and will report results very soon. (Analysts’ price target is 3.00$)
