He owns both Stewart Enterprises (STEI-Q) and Service Enterprises (SCI-N). They're both in the funeral sector. Service has hit his target, but he has not sold yet to see if it will run further. Pretty much recession proof. Think they both have a ways to run.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 7/05. Up 22%.) Now has it is a hold. Huge turnaround. Major problem was a huge debt load through acquisitions. Cash flow positive last quarter. Buying back shares.
PAST TOP PICK
(A Top Pick June 7. Up 14.2%.) Was on their BUY list, but have shifted it to their HOLD list. Have been losing money. Took a lot of legal fees because of problems in Florida. Have had other write-offs they've had to deal with. Revenues have been going up. Have pared their huge debt load down about 50%. Now have a dividend.
TOP PICK
Bought it at around $4.81. Has moved up gradually over time. Pared their huge debt back by about 33%. Do about $1.8 billion in sales. Have started to have a dividend. In the last quarter they had a loss of almost $190 million, but most of that was because of accounting adjustments. Otherwise they would have made about $30 million.
BUY
Have a lot of debt to deal with but they have pared back a lot of it. Revenues have been stabilized.
BUY
Seems to be getting in better and better shape. Still has a huge debt load.
PAST TOP PICK
(June 30/03. Up 51%.) Still considered as a buy. Have pared back their debt.
TOP PICK
Have just settled their lawsuit for $100 million. This means there is more certainty going forward, but it is an awful lot of money. Debt load.
TOP PICK
Likes sectors that are out of favour. Have pared back the debt load a lot. Seems to be managing better. Still have a large debt load and there is a danger of the US dollar dropping further.
TOP PICK
Likes the funeral industry. Sector crashed a few years ago, but thinks it has potential to recover. Still having problems with a Florida lawsuit. Have been dealing with their debt load and are making a small profit now.
BUY
The legal situation has improved. This industry should keep going regardless of what happens to the economy.
PAST TOP PICK
(Was a top pick June 30/03. Up 3.4%.)
BUY
Has been a loser so far. Have settled the major lawsuit with the government.
TOP PICK
Have settled their lawsuit. Big debt load.
