Blackberry phone has been a great story. Issues really relate to the success of Apple (AAPL-Q). The big question is, can they win on the back of the enterprise market and are their products sufficiently attractive to attract the consumer market. A risky play and there are better opportunities to invest in.
We haven’t seen how effective they are going to be in actually achieving the results that the stock was expected to achieve. Stock has run up, probably because they have actually introduced the product. Was impressed with their new BB 10 but not sure it is enough to impress people who own other products to move. Has some really great features.
Stock is down 17% since BB10 was announced. A lot of people had high expectations for the device and clearly some people were disappointed that the US launch was delayed to March or April depending on the device. Appears to be a very good product but is it enough for existing users to upgrade or for iPhone users to switch? Analysts are still forecasting that the company is going to lose money.
Doesn’t think the difference between getting the phones out in February or March in the US is that big of an impact. Rolling it out in other global markets relatively quickly. Big question is, does it get the traction. You’ll have a refresh cycle and the first couple of quarters are going to look good no matter what. The BB10 business model is not as profitable because it is on the carriers rather than Blackberry’s own network so they lose all those fees. They have a lot of positives going for them. Too early to write this off.
Has been the best performing stock over the last 4 months but has had a huge move, all based on hopes for BB10. Company has done a good job of getting its balance sheets in order and getting its cash position in shape. Wouldn’t jump in at this point but if he owned it, would probably Hold for a bit longer. Very speculative.
Thinks they dropped the ball and fumbled and the market punished them. The low in the last few months is probably as low as it gets. The band of price targets seems to be limited to the high teens. All the good news for the BB10 is priced in. Wait for the low teens to invest. He just sold some for clients north of $17
In the past he felt if it broke out above $8 or $9 it would probably double from there. We are seeing consolidation here. It is to be seen if it can motor on beyond the short-term consolidation. It is currently in a triangle pattern. The trend is up and there is a favorable outlook, but if it breaks the lower line of the triangle then it will go down.
